Calathea, also known as the Never Never Plant, is a popular indoor plant that requires specific care to thrive. It enjoys bright, indirect light, consistently moist (but not soggy) soil, and high humidity. Avoid direct sunlight and cold drafts, and fertilize monthly during the growing season.

  • Light:
  • Ctenanthe thrives in medium to bright indirect light. It prefers locations near north or east-facing windows. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
  • Watering:
  • Keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged. Allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while underwatering can cause the leaves to curl and dry out.
  • Humidity:
  • Ctenanthe prefers higher humidity levels, similar to its native tropical environment. If your home is dry, consider using a humidifier or placing the plant on a pebble tray to increase humidity.
  • Temperature:
  • Maintain temperatures between 60°F to 85°F (15°C to 29°C). Avoid placing the plant near cold drafts from windows or doors, or near air conditioning vents.
  • Fertilizing:
  • Feed your Ctenanthe with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength once a month during the spring and summer months. Stop fertilizing during the fall and winter when the plant is not actively growing.
  • Soil:
  • Use a well-draining potting mix that retains some moisture.
  • Pruning:
  • Regularly remove any dead or damaged leaves to maintain the plant's appearance and prevent the spread of disease.
  • Pests:
  • Ctenanthe can be susceptible to spider mites, especially in dry air. Regularly check for pests and treat them promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
